On April 8, 1888, thirty stagehands from the Brooklyn Academy of Music, America’s oldest performing arts center, the Amphion, The Montauk, The Grand Opera House and the Athenaeum theaters, gathered together and signed a charter forming Local No. 4, a charter whose ideals have lasted 120 years.

Five years later, on July 17, 1893, representatives from the Brooklyn local met with representatives from New York City, Boston, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Denver, Buffalo, Syracuse and St. Louis to form the National Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.   This organization would later be known as the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. Local No. 4 would become an intricate part in the formation and future of this organization.

Today, with more than 300 members, Local No. 4 continues to serve the needs of the entertainment industry.
